Rebranding a Brander: Changing my marketing business

For most companies or businesspeople, there comes a time when you have to take a look at what you’ve been doing and ask yourself if it’s actually what you want to do.

I know because I’ve helped people do it.

But now I find myself in the rebranding hot seat because while my business is working…it’s not working for me.

I’m actually glad I’m here because I think there is no better way to help people with their marketing and rebranding than experiencing it yourself. My social media and content have always been my marketing laboratory where I experiment and find what works and what doesn’t.

I’m in this position of rebranding because, while my business can keep going exactly as it is, there is something missing and that’s been the case for a long time. I’m fulfilled by some of the things I do and feel bogged down by others. I’m energized one day and then the next I’m dragging myself to the computer. Now, one might think that’s not so bad; if I’m feeling good part of the time, shouldn’t I just keep doing what I’m doing?

I don’t think so.

I own my own business. I work with people who own their own businesses. I would say that the reason why we do what we do is because when we started, we were passionate about it. And that passion, along with our know-how, is what inspires people to invest in us.

But humans evolve. We just do. Our interests change and so does our focus. We gain more experience. We learn more about ourselves and what makes us tick. And ideally, our businesses should be in alignment with who we are.

Otherwise, why are we wasting our time? And theirs?

This summer, I’ve invested in coaching, energy work, self-help books and podcasts. This has all led me to a blank piece of paper I started brainstorming on that asked a major, yet basic, question.

I think any rebranding has to start there. You have to think about where you’ve been, what you’ve loved about it, and what you’ve hated. Where are your frustrations? Where is your joy? If you could spend 6-8 hours a day doing anything…what would it be?

Because, honestly, if you own your own business and you’re not doing that…then what’s the point?

More specifically, I’ve asked myself these three questions:

  1. What do I like about what I do?

  2. What do I dislike about what I do?

  3. What do I REALLY want to do if I could do anything?

Those basic questions have provided me with more clarity than all of the coaching and self-help I’ve been investing in all summer. I’ve figured out that what needs to be done isn’t a complete overhaul of my business or shutting the door and starting over – it’s actually a very doable restructuring that will aim me in the direction I need to go.

So, because I know I’m not the only one out there facing this dilemma, which is both exciting and frustrating, I’ve decided to blog about my rebranding. I will be blogging about creating the content necessary to attract the business I want, the visual rebrand, including photo shoot and video, and the process I'm going to go through to shift my business back into alignment with my life and purpose.

To be continued.
